The Long Arm of the U

Reaching out to the community has long been a goal of the Alumni Association. And through the work of active chapters throughout the United States, that reach can extend even beyond the confines of the Salt Lake Valley.

Case in point: the Alumni Association's annual food drive. This year, the Association, in cooperation with the BYU Alumni Association, collected food and donations from around the Salt Lake City area, culminating in collections at the gates of Rice-Eccles Stadium at the Utah/BYU game November 21. Almost 200,000 pounds of food and $8,000 in cash donations were given to the Utah Food Bank, a delivery that, as Dixie Burbidge BS'90 of the Food Bank noted, "was the best ever. And we had more community involvement than ever before."

In conjunction with the Association food drive, chapters in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Washington, D.C. areas held their own food drives. According to Davis Tubre MBA'73, the Dallas drive netted over 300 pounds of food for their local hunger relief efforts. D.C. alumni, who, Charlotte Oswald BS'94 reports, gathered at a local sports bar to watch the Utah/BYU game, donated their collected food to the House of Ruth, a local women's shelter. Such efforts help communities across the country feel the effects of the U's outreach.

Chapters are involved in service projects year-round. Like the volunteers who made this year's food drives an even greater success than last year's, chapter coordinator Maria Contratto is proud of the outcome. Just don't ask her about the outcome of this year's Utah/BYU game...

And don't forget our international alumni!

Buoyed by the success of its first European alumni reunion in Heidelburg, Germany, last summer, the International Resource Network of the U of U International Center will sponsor a second reunion in Brussels, Belgium, June 11 and 12, 1999.

Besides the social events, the reunion will feature a conference, "The New Europe Seminar," which will include panel presentations by some of Utah's and Europe's foremost experts on Europe's transition to a single currency. Senior Vice President David Pershing will lead the University of Utah delegation in Brussels. Alumni will have a chance to meet with Utah business leaders and Europeans who are interested in commerce with the United States.

For more information, call the International Center at 801-581-8876 or visit its Web site at www.saff.utah.edu/international.
